Description: A photo-essay tells a story through a series of photographs. Youth in this workshop will work with a digital camera to actively shoot, edit and print a portfolio of 3 to 5 images based on the urbanNOISE ’08 theme of UNITY. Participants will also work in a group setting to develop thematic concepts and critique work through discussion. In the process youth will learn photographic skills such as composition and lighting with urbanNOISE teaching artist Angie Choi. This workshop is brought to you in partnership with Toronto Culture, Arts Services and rotates workshop locations.

Description: In this workshop you will learn and then use a printmaking process called silk-screening (a.k.a. pimping) to design and transfer detailed images to not only your shirt, but all sorts of surfaces. This is your chance to use colorful paints and other gadgets to creatively communicate your ideas to a large number of folks by pimping your wardrobe. The surfaces that you decide to pimp with the aid of urbanNOISE teaching artist Rob Matejka will be long-lasting, durable, and stylish.

Description: This workshop is designed to bring aspiring singers, songwriters and digital beatmakers together in a creative music-making hub. Participants will have the opportunity to wear the hat of songwriter, singer and beatmaker or pinpoint their focus on a specific aspect of the music-making process that gets their juices flowing. So whether you want to write lyrics, belt out verses or create, edit and mix an audio recording there’s plenty to keep you bumping with urbanNOISE music maestros Rosina Kazi and Basil “Wong” Jardine.

Description: Learn about the different aspects of breakdancing (a.k.a. b-boyin’ or breakin’) and its rich history and culture through hands on dance instruction, as well as movie/battle viewing, discussion and special assignments with urbanNOISE teaching artist MaeHem. Workshop sessions will focus on foundation moves, giving you the skills needed to put together a short group performance piece. The classes will also touch on battle tactics, cypher etiquette, breakin’ history, music and fashion.
Description: Learn the basic fundamentals, skills and techniques of being a tuff Deejay, such as creating a vibe, reading a crowd and genre transitions. urbanNOISE instructor DJ Fase will also give you the goods on equipment knowledge and use, mixing, basic scratching, song structure (counting beats and bars), music programming and appreciation. A brief history examining the role and importance of the DJ in Hip-Hop, vinyl culture and old versus new technology will also be explored.

While learning fundamental techniques in this dance style, talented urbanNOISE instructor Joseph Sackey will expose you to the relationship between its deeply rooted African origins and its modern and contemporary movements.
